La marine soviétique étant en grande partie bloquée dans ses ports, de nombreux marins furent envoyés au combat comme fantassins de première ligne, souvent encore vêtus de leur uniforme naval noir, avec leur casquette distinctive et leur marinière rayée telnyashka.

Plusieurs unités spécialisées d’infanterie navale furent constituées : quarante brigades et cinq régiments. Elles acquirent une réputation de ténacité et d’audace, aussi bien dans les combats défensifs que lors des opérations de débarquement sur les côtes de la mer Baltique et de la mer Noire. Grâce à leur expérience militaire préalable et à leur solide esprit de corps, elles comptaient parmi les meilleures troupes à la disposition des commandants soviétiques. Il en va de même sur la table de jeu Bolt Action, où les unités de Brigade navale font partie des règles spéciales de l’armée Hammer & Sickle et bénéficient de la très utile règle « Tough Fighters ».

Soviet infantry were often confronted head-on with enemy armour, particularly in the brutal meat-grinder of Stalingrad. Without supporting heavy weaponry, they were forced to improvise and adapt new tactics for destroying enemy vehicles at close range – a task requiring extreme dedication, something for which the Naval Brigades were renowned. Perhaps the simplest anti-tank weapon of the war was the ‘Molotov Cocktail’, a home-made incendiary grenade, while the German Panzerfaust, captured in huge numbers, became the favoured late-war weapon of Soviet tank hunters. On the Bolt Action tabletop, Tank Hunters give you a small unit of Infiltrators with a lethal anti-tank punch, making them a perfect addition to any Rifle Platoon expecting to face enemy armour.

Soviet forces, including the Naval Brigades, benefited from enormous amounts of indirect fire support from the ‘god of war’ – their long-range artillery. With truly stunning numbers of gun and rocket batteries on hand, the Red Army could call down a rain of fire to support their advances or prevent enemy breakthroughs. Similarly, they enjoyed excellent close air support, courtesy of the legendary IL-2 ‘Sturmovik’, a truly lethal aircraft designed exclusively for low-level strikes. All this firepower needs someone to direct it onto its target, though – enter the Forward Observer Team. Two men armed with the most dangerous weapons of all, binoculars and radio, this small team gives any Soviet Rifle Platoon a seriously heavy punch on the Bolt Action tabletop.
