La bataille des Ardennes, également connue sous le nom de bataille du Bulge, fut l’une des dernières grandes offensives allemandes sur le front occidental pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Elle a eu lieu du 16 décembre 1944 au 25 janvier 1945, principalement en Belgique, dans les Ardennes, une région dense en forêts et au relief accidenté. Cette bataille est remarquable par son ampleur, son intensité et les conditions hivernales extrêmes dans lesquelles elle s’est déroulée.

Contexte et Objectifs de l’Offensive Allemande

À l’automne 1944, les forces alliées progressaient rapidement à travers l’Europe après le débarquement de Normandie. Cependant, le front s’était stabilisé, et les Allemands voyaient une opportunité de frapper un coup décisif. Hitler espérait que cette offensive dans les Ardennes permettrait de diviser les forces alliées, de capturer le port vital d’Anvers et de négocier un traité de paix favorable à l’Allemagne.

Le Déroulement de la Bataille

L’offensive allemande a commencé par une attaque surprise à travers les Ardennes, une région que les Alliés considéraient comme peu propice à une offensive de grande envergure. Les conditions météorologiques défavorables, avec un épais brouillard et une neige abondante, ont empêché l’aviation alliée d’intervenir, ce qui a donné un avantage initial aux forces allemandes.

Les Allemands ont engagé environ 200 000 soldats et 1 000 chars dans cette offensive, perçant les lignes alliées et créant un « bulge » (renflement) dans le front, d’où le nom de la bataille en anglais. Les forces alliées, prises par surprise, ont subi des pertes importantes dans les premiers jours. Cependant, la résistance a été héroïque, notamment à Bastogne, où une garnison américaine encerclée a tenu bon jusqu’à l’arrivée des renforts.

La Contre-offensive Alliée

Malgré les succès initiaux, les Allemands ont rapidement manqué de carburant et de renforts, ce qui a ralenti leur avance. Lorsque les conditions météorologiques se sont améliorées, les forces aériennes alliées ont pu attaquer les colonnes allemandes. En janvier 1945, les Alliés, renforcés par de nouvelles troupes, ont lancé une contre-offensive massive qui a repoussé les Allemands et refermé le « bulge ».

At its core is a strong Rifle Platoon with three full squads of paratroopers, backed up by Sniper and Panzerschreck teams – this flexible formation is capable of taking and holding objectives, and is the heart of any Bolt Action force.

Backing up the Rifle Platoon is a trio of powerful supporting formations. The Heavy Weapons Platoon provides both direct fire in the form of a brace of Medium Machine Guns, and high-explosive death from on high with its Medium Mortar, while the small but powerful Artillery Platoon gives the force some serious anti-tank punch from the PaK 40 anti-tank gun!

Rounding out the force is the Armoured Platoon, bringing both wheels and tracks to the battlefield. The Sd.Kfz 223 command armoured car has excellent mobility, and leads the way for the mighty StuG III G assault gun, equally capable of blasting enemy infantry and vehicles.

With these four platoons, you get a great core force that can be used on the tabletop right away, and serve as the basis for a large and versatile collection.   • Germany’s highly effective blitzkrieg tactics during the early years of WWI in Europe, Africa, and the Eastern Front required fast, manoeuvrable vehicles. German blitzkrieg was made infamous at the start of the war and continued to prove effective in the deserts of North Africa. Spearheading these rapid and highly mobile attacks were the Wehrmacht’s Aufklärungsabteilungen (reconnaissance battalions). They ranged ahead of the main Panzer divisions, seeking safe routes and pinpointing enemy positions for elimination.

    The Sd.Kfz 222 Leichter Panzerspähwagen (light armoured reconnaissance vehicle) was a four-wheeled drive armoured car built by Horch and armed with a 2cm light autocannon and co-axial MG34 machine gun. The Sd.Kfz 223 command variant removed the autocannon and added radio equipment with distinctive aerial frame. Seeing action in all theatres of war in which German forces participated it was also fielded by Romanian, Bulgarian and Nationalist Chinese armies.
